Initiatives and petitions are causes raised by residents, members or groups themselves – independently of ongoing participatory processes. Whoever starts an initiative describes the cause and collects signatures online. Once the required number is reached, the responsible body has to deal with it.

This demo includes three examples: a residents’ motion to a municipal council (100 signatures), a petition to a ministry (500) and a member motion to the general assembly of an association (25). All organisations are fictional.

Safe routes to school: 30 km/h outside every school in Musterstadt

Every morning around 2,400 children in Musterstadt walk, cycle or scoot to school. Yet several primary and secondary schools are still located on 50 km/h roads – some of them hard to overlook and without safe crossings.

We call on the municipal council to introduce:

  1. A 30 km/h limit within 300 metres of all schools and kindergartens in the city.

  2. Safe crossings (zebra crossings, traffic islands or school crossing patrols) on the five busiest routes to school.

  3. An annual walk-through of school routes together with parents, pupils and the police.

Experience from other municipalities shows that 30 km/h zones clearly reduce the risk of accidents and make it easier for parents to let their children walk on their own. Support our motion with your signature!
